What is the main focus of your site?
To provide commentary on the world of cinema that elevates the experience of my readers. I am less concerned with telling my readers whether or not a film is good or bad than I am with telling them exactly what it is they are seeing. I want to make my readers better movie goers, to increase their appreciation and enjoyment of the cinema, in the vain of Bordwell or Denby.
What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
The blog now is primarily a springboard to bigger and better things. I have won a handful of awards for my criticism in local newspapers and will soon be graduating with a minor in film. I hope to someday write criticism for a newspaper. Ghost on Screen is my ever-growing resume.
Do you prefer an interactive community for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers the students?
Both. I provide a lot of history lessons in my columns, but I'm always excited to engage in discussion. To me, there is nothing more vital to the cinematic experience (outside of watching the movie) than lively debate.
How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
I've been blogging about movies for about two years now. My first site crashed and cost me all of my work up to that point. During the school year, I post about twice a week. Outside of that, about once a week.
Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
2001: A Space Odyssey ~ The most transcendental film I've ever seen, about so much more than what most movies settle for. It is the most spiritual experience I have on my shelf. City Lights ~ Chaplin's beautiful hymn of blind love makes me cry laughing. Then it makes me cry for real. The Passion of Joan of Arc ~ Renee Falconetti's performance is the most astonishingly powerful I've ever seen committed to celluloid. No one person has ever made me feel so much from the other side of the fourth wall.
How did you hear about the LAMB?
My friend Jon Fisher contributes to Ghost on Screen fairly regularly. His The Film Brief is already a member of LAMB.
Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that's not listed above.
I am a two time winner of best review for the Daily Nebraskan here in Lincoln, NE, as well as first and second place winner for my column on classic movies, and was recently honored as the outstanding contributor of the semester for my work in film criticism. I've only written for the paper for a year and a half. My work has appeared in two newspapers and three websites.
