Today we're getting controversial! We all know who Roman Polanski is right? Most people remember him as the husband of Manson victim Sharon Tate, or his alleged sexual assault of a thirteen year old girl which has kept him away from the US for a while opting to hide out in Europe. That's most people though. A lot of people though know of him to be an amazing director who always tells a great story and is so visually brilliant and painstakingly crafts his films to make them as great as possible. He is the man behind classics like Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown, Tess and The Pianist. He is also responsible for making one of my personal favorite adaptations of Oliver Twist. Despite however I may think of him as a person I do really respect the man as a great filmmaker and I hope I'm not in the minority.
So you can probably guess my excitement when he announced he was making a new film, his first official film in 5 years (he did make a short film for the Cannes collection To Each His Own Cinema but his last film was 2005's Oliver Twist) titled the Ghost Writer. The Ghost Writer is based on the 2007 novel "The Ghost" by Robert Harris. The book, (and essentially the movie) is about a ghost writer known as The Ghost (Ewan McGregor) who is writing the memoirs for former British Prime Minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan). Things get complicated though when he learns his predecessor died mysteriously and Lang may be involved somehow in a political scandal.
So without further ado here is the trailer:
So what are my initial thoughts? Well I'm actually looking forward to this movie. The cinematography looks great (from what I've seen), Roman Polanski seems to be in top form, not only as a director but as a writer, and the acting seems quite good. I've always liked Ewan McGregor and he seems to be in top form as well. Surprisingly Pierce Brosnan looks quite good as well, a surprise since his last movie Mama Mia wasn't exactly a good performance for him. He has that cockiness and that brash attitude but an almost Bond-like suaveness to him as well. Rounding it out Kim Cattrall and Olivia Williams seem to give great performances as well.
But that's just my opinion. Comment down below and tell me what you think.
Until next time I am Travis McCollum and this has been Trailer Talk Thursday.
