I need to think of a better catchphrase...anyway speaking of catchphrases today we are going to be talking about a superhero movie. No its not the rumored Batman 3 or Spider Man reboot and sadly Tom Clift it's not a new Kick-Ass trailer, instead it's a movie I have been waiting to see for a long time: Woody Harrelson playing a deranged superhero. And his new movie DEFENDOR has done just that.
Created by Peter Stebbings in 2005, Defendor was his unique telling on the superpower less superhero named Arthur who is deranged, delusional, and violent but still did his damnedest to protect the city from Captain Industry while befriending a young prostitute who aids him in his quest.
Well that didn't sit to well with most studios back then so he couldn't really sell his film. Stebbings then went on to write and direct other movies but all the while still wanting to go back to his original masterpiece. Thanks to Telefilm Canada, his own personal finances and back alley deals he was able to finally shoot his picture in early 2009. It debuted at the Toronto Film Festival and was picked up Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisition Group. Sony made sure to distribute the film all over the world and did...with one exception: The US. Well Darius Films (the producers) weren't going to let that happen so they got the rights to distribute it in the US and now it's scheduled for a late February release here.

So without further ado here is the trailer:
So what are my initial thoughts? Well a lot of people are probably going to compare this to Kick-Ass.. The over the top violence, deranged heroes and colorful costume are probably gonna cause people to compare. I think that's not right. I think considering that the Kick Ass comic was created three years after the original screenplay for Defendor was made and that there are a lot of other non super power superhero movies (Punisher, Mystery Men) that this should stand on its own.
Personally I love this film already. Woody has made a pretty good comeback lately and has proved, in Zombieland at least, that he plays a kick ass hero. I like the costume, I love his arsenal (the wasps make me laugh every time) and the dialogue (from what I've seen) looks darkly funny and well done. This films already got a lot of positive attention so I can't wait to see it when it comes out.
But that's just my opinion. Tell me what ya'll think down below in the comments. So until next time I'm Travis McCollum of the Movie Encyclopedia and this has been Trailer Talk Thursday.
