Hello and welcome to Trailer Talk Thursday. I am Travis McCollum of the Movie Encyclopedia and I'm here to bring you the latest trailers to hit the silver screen.
If you know me then you know I love classic rock. 8 out of my top 10 favorite bands are from the 80s or before. There is just something about music that has changed from back in the day to now. Music used to be a lot more passionate and intense, rock stars weren't just glittered up pretty boys (I'm looking at you Jonas) and the music was a lot better. There was a time when "Sex, drugs and rock and roll" were cool and people could experience great events like Woodstock back when it was great. And while there is still good music today, I think the best days are behind us.
Joan Jett is my favorite female singer of all time. Her ability to be a true female warrior who really doesn't give a crap what people think, even to this day, is amazing. Even now she is still as good live as she was years ago. But what some people, especially people born in my era, don't know is that she used to be part of the first successful all-girl rock band known as The Runaways. Started up by Joan and Cherie Currie, these two proved that girls can really rock and stand up toe to toe with the boys. And they were popular with such hits as Cherry Bomb, Queens of Noise, Born to be Bad and Neon Angels. But while they were amazing and popular, sadly there time was short lived due to disagreements and disputes between bandmates. Cherie, after the band broke up, went on to be an actress and ended up writing a book called Neon Angel: the Cherie Currie Story.
This would end up being the source material for a film produced by Jett and directed by music video director Floria Sigismondi called The Runaways, based on the tales of Currie and Jett. They would get 16 year old experienced veteran Dakota Fanning to play Currie and Twilight superstar Kristin Stewart to play Jett. They eventually got Scout Taylor, Stella Maeve, and Alia Shawkat to fill out the rest of the band and the film was off. It premiered at Sundance and was quickly picked up by Apparition, the studio behind Black Dynamite and is now set to release April 9th, 2010 all over the US. So without further ado here is the trailer for The Runaways
So what do I think? I'm actually really excited for it. The style of everything is very 70s retro and works well with the film. The casting actually seems really good although I AM actually worried slightly about Dakota playing an older part even though she is 16. But still she is quite experienced already and DOES do well with the role. I am particularly excited about Kristin Stewart though. Stewart IS a good actress but we never get to see it. She is always in those damn Twilight movies and those aren't really helping her career at all. And that's a shame because she is amazing in the highly underrated Adventureland and she has proved in other movies that she has chops. Hopefully this movie can show audiences that Stewart is more than just a lower lip biting whiner with no direction. All in all a good trailer and I'm optimistic that the film will be good.
But that's just my opinion. Tell me what you think in the comments down below and I'll see you all next time on Trailer Talk Thursday.
