Hey everybody, Travis of The Movie Encyclopedia here with another edition of Trailer Talk Thursday, where I bring you the latest trailers to hit the silver screen.
Just in time for the holidays we get a myriad trailers shoved in our faces. Be it the new Fast and Furious, Terrence Malick's new film, a non Twilight Pattinson flick or a random animated film, the internet is completely swamped with new trailers. Instead of going over all of them I found 3 that I think are definitely worth mentioning, two of which have caused a major stir in movie goers and fanboys all over the world. That's right, I'm talking about the Thor movie and Pirates of the Caribbean 4. But I couldn't just leave it at that, especially when there is a new movie trailer featuring Christopher Walken out there. So I just had to feature Kill the Irishman in this post as well. And since the other two are gonna be the topic of discussion in the comments, I will start with Kill the Irishman.
Kill the Irishman is the story of Danny Greene. Greene is the man who pretty much single handedly ended most of the Mafia syndicates located in the US. He grew up in a tough neighborhood and quickly became an enforcer for the Mob. Problem is, when he started getting pressured by rival groups and gangs, as well as people from within his own mob, he decided to go rogue and take out all of these bad guys himself. That led to him having a giant target on his back that no normal person would ever want. Who would really want to be hunted down by the mob? The odd thing though is that nobody could kill him. They shot him, beat and left him for dead, blew him up and destroyed everything he had but they could not kill him. Greene even had the balls to go on the news and dare the Mafia and anybody else to kill him. And they couldn't.
Sounds like a great idea for a movie, doesn't it. Add in a group of great "actors who need quality roles bad" like Val Kilmer, Vincent D'Onofrio, Ray Stevenson and Vinnie Jones as well as the genius that is Walken and you got yourself a great film.

Next up is Thor...
Ever since this movie was announced, fanboys and comic lovers alike have had multiple mood swings about what they think of the film. One minute they love it, the next they hate it. Then something gets announced and it's back to love, but then shortly back to hate. It's a continuous cycle that has not been (or has been I guess) helped by the recent debut trailer and poster for the upcoming movie. Some are excited for it, thinking it will have the Iron Man effect (lesser known superhero to the general public getting his own movie and it blowing up to blockbuster proportions) and some think it will tarnish the good name of Thor. Me? I'm optimistic. I've been a fan of the Thor comics for a while and I've always thought it would be nice to see Thor get the big screen treatment. The trailer looks exciting enough, Chris Hemsworth isn't some broken English jacked up bodybuilder type (which some people think is bad) and the inclusion of Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings, Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins is cool seeing as they are all quality actors. I mean the 3D thing seems a bit much, as it's probably converted (they stated in many interviews that it was shot in 2D) and we all know how most conversion films turn out, but other than that I really have no problem. I'll reserve judgement until May.

Finally Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides...
Hmm...well I don't know honestly. Part of me is happy because they got rid of Kiera Knightley and Orlando Bloom and are instead focusing on the Jack Sparrow and Barbossa being pirates doing pirate activities but part of me is hesitant seeing as how the first movie was good all around but the series kind of took a dive plot wise in the second and third movies focusing instead on effects and action. That didn't mean that they were unwatchable, just that it never reached the level of the first movie again in terms of quality. That being said, from the trailer alone I can tell they actually have a good story (if they decide to even remotely follow the book that the story is based on), a tighter focus (no more throwaway love stories or backstabbing octopus people) and they toned down Jack to a level where he was still quirky but not annoyingly so. Granted that's just three minutes of a probably 2 hour movie, but I think that if they can get back to the core of what the series is really about: pirates and searching for treasure (something lost in the second and third movie for the most part) and what I noticed in the trailer is true for the whole movie then it could be as good or better then the original. Or I could be wrong and it's an epic fail. Hopefully I'm not wrong.
