Sundance Film Festival is a pretty big event for filmmakers and film fans alike. Independent directors get to showcase their talents in hope of getting picked up, famous directors debut their new soon to be smash hit and if nothing else we get a lot of interesting trailers for movies we may or may not end up seeing. This year is no exception and one of the films that has me pretty excited is a small indie comedy called "Cyrus."
Not the head of the Gramercy Riffs and certainly not the spawn of Billy Ray Cyrus, "Cyrus" is the newest film from the Duplass brothers. If you have no idea who these two are, they are famous for making really good indie films like 2008s Baghead and 2005s The Puffy Chair. They have a unique style of making everything look very natural and have a knack for blending serious and seriously funny to make a great movie.
Along with the stylistic expertise of the Duplass brothers you got some great talent in front of the camera. The film follows John, (played by the hilarious John C Reilly) a somewhat socially awkward man who is looking for love after losing the love of his life (Catherine Keener). One day he meets Molly (Marisa Tomei) and falls hard for her. Everything SEEMS to be going okay until John meets the other man in Molly's life...Cyrus (Jonah Hill), her grown son living at home.

Just from the initial impressions this film gets a good couple of laughs out of me. John C. Reilly has got a knack for playing lovable losers and it really shows in this film. His rendition of "Don't You Want Me" is hilarious and his interactions with Cyrus are pretty funny. Jonah Hill actually seems pretty funny in this movie, downplaying that angry pottymouth that we've seen him have and opting more for a subtlety to get laughs which seems to work a lot better for him. Overall the acting seems pretty solid and storywise it looks pretty interesting.
