Trailer Talk Thursday: We need the best...We need MacGruber!

Hey everybody! I am Travis McCollum of The Movie Encyclopedia and welcome to Trailer Talk Thursday!

I know Trailer Talk has been gone for a while but when a new position at LAMB became available I knew one of the things that should come back is Trailer Talk. Granted in the past couple of LAMBcast's we've drained most of the recent trailers to come out but as long as new movies come out and sites like Trailer Addict are up, there WILL be new trailers.

Onto this week's trailer: MacGruber. If you've watched Saturday Night Live in the past couple of years there is a good chance that you've seen or heard of MacGruber. Created by Jorma Taccone, a member of the Lonely Island, MacGruber is a short minute long filler sketch starring Will Forte and Kristin Wiig that parodies the hit 80s television series MacGyver.

In the sketch, MacGruber and his crew would be stuck in a room with a bomb that had only about 30 seconds before detonation. The punchline and reoccurring theme of the sketches is that MacGruber would start diffusing the bomb with random items (stick, gum, paper clip) but then get distracted by different things - whether its his son coming out of the closet, alcoholism, his fear of aging or losing money in the stock market - only to have the bomb explode before he got back on track. Usually each episode of Saturday Night Live would feature two or three of these sketches each with the same theme.

As funny as the sketch was (that's not saying much considering the past couple years of SNL), it came as a surprise to me one day to see a trailer for a movie version of MacGruber. Sure, it's not uncommon that Saturday Night Live characters would get there own movie a la Night at the Roxbury and Superstar, but for MacGruber it seemed like it would be tougher to make it into a movie considering the length of the sketch and the total lack of background on the character.

But two trailers (one green band, one red band) have been released for this film and it actually looks like this film is supposed to be taken seriously. I don't mean it's a drama, I mean that it's not like a fake trailer but a legitimate film.

Here are the two trailers:

Green Band

and Red Band

My initial thoughts? This film actually looks good. Not groundbreaking and certainly not an award winner but it looks like its going to be good. It has a Mel Brooks-ish style of character names (Val Kilmer's character) and it looks like it has some pretty good comedic timing. The red band trailer is a little vague on details and the jokes aren't as funny but the green band trailer gives a lot more detail and the jokes are a lot more frequent and funnier in my opinion. I think Kristin Wiig is always hilarious and she seems to shine pretty well in this movie. It's definitely Will Forte's film though and he brings the character of MacGruber to life quite well. Val Kilmer looks like a blonde Steven Seagal and the inclusion of all the WWE wrestlers is a bit weird (although Get Smart showed me that it IS possible to have wrestlers and be funny).

But it's up to you all. Do you think it's funny? Tell me what you think by commenting in the section below.

Until next week, I am Travis McCollum of The Movie Encyclopedia and this has been Trailer Talk Thursday.
