Hey everybody, Travis of The Movie Encyclopedia here with another edition of Trailer Talk Thursday where I bring you the latest trailers to hit the silver screen.
Note: I'll try to keep this edition of T3 pretty short and sweet since most of you are probably busy reading the Devour posts so hope you enjoy.
I'm fully aware we are pretty busy here at the LAMB right now with the "Devour the Oscars" series but I figure since I covered the Super Bowl last year, that I should at least mention some of the numerous TV Spots they showed and one trailer that has taken the internet by storm. What is that trailer you ask? Go to Google and type in x-men and you should have a pretty good idea...it's the latest X-Men film by director Matthew Vaughn (of Kick-Ass fame) entitled X-Men: First Class.
There has been plenty of controversy surrounding this film since it was first announced. Whether it's the fact they are using younger versions of our favorite heroes, the casting decisions/switches/rumors, or the fact that there hasn't REALLY been a great X-Men film since the X-2, a lot of people have a lot of varying opinions about this one. The general consensus by many was that it was gonna fall flat like the last two, especially with Thor and Captain America coming out this year alongside it, but that consensus was greatly changed by many when the first trailer was released earlier today.
Before we go on here is the trailer:
Pretty awesome right? Well at least that's what I think. The CGI and effects look a lot better than they did before, the cast (or at least that of Magneto and Professor Xavier) looks promising and it's inclusion of some lesser known heroes alongside some staples of the franchise is good for seasoned fans like myself as well as newbies to the series who may want to learn more about the canon of the X-Men universe.
Moving onto my first of two TV Spots...Captain America: The First Avenger
Captain America has had a very horrific film life since his incarnation. There were two Reb Brown made for television movies that mostly consisted of recycled driving footage and featured the Captain, or at least his costumed self, for about 15 minutes and had him carry around a Frisbee for a weapon. And then there was the 1990 film which basically is what this current film is following (incarnation and battle with Red Skull) except the 1990 film had terrible acting, plot holes as wide as the Grand Canyon and the Captain himself did some incredibly stupid and cowardly things. Well now this new version is out and while it's only 30 seconds, it's 30 seconds of great hope. Chris Evans has left his Human Torch days behind him and looks to become a great Captain America (although Human Target's Mark Valley or Nathan Fillion would have still been better). Add in Hugo Weaving as the villain and a script that features Joss Whedon on it (to a certain extent) and we may have a great film on our hands. I'll cover the full trailer when it comes out but for now here is the TV spot
And finally we have JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg's new film Super 8
When I saw the first trailer for Super 8 I thought it was a sequel to my favorite monster movie of all time Cloverfield. I mean Abrams+aliens+cameras should equal Cloverfield but alas, after watching the Super Bowl TV Spot those dreams were shot out the window since the film is not in first person like Cloverfield was. That being said however I do have hope for this movie. I adore Kyle Chandler (of Friday Night Lights) and the inclusion of Spielberg should prove to be most interesting so I can't wait to see what the future holds for this movie. Hopefully it will prove to be the alien monster movie we were expecting and more.
