Director's Chair #13 -- Day Three

Film director Roger Corman can be attributed with offering Francis Ford Coppola with an extremely helpful boost back in the early 1960s. Coppola was working as a production assistant for Corman when they were shooting the film The Young Racers (1963). During the course of the production Coppola was able to borrow some of the cast, crew, and production equipment during the down time of the shooting schedule. The side project was a feature length screenplay that Coppola had written titled Dementia 13 and he was able to film the movie with the borrowed equipment and personnel. The helpful “leg up” from Corman allowed Coppola to gain a notable amount of real world experience in the film industry, but it did not place him on the map as an immediate icon in filmmaking. It was not until a few years later when he scored the job of adapting a couple of published books into a military biography-film that scored him award-winning recognition at the Oscars. The film is Patton (1970) and he now shares his Oscar award with fellow writer Edmund North. This opened up the floodgates for him to move into big name projects that he has directed such as The Godfather and The Conversation.

Francis Ford Coppola has worn many production hats over the course of his filmmaking career. He has written screenplays, produced several films, worked as a production assistant on several movies during the early part of his career, as well as earning a notable career as a movie director. The range of movies within his career include such a strong variety of genres that it can be a bit surprising to consider they are all connected to the same director. There are a couple of horror films to his credit, a widely recognizable war film that he penned and directed, and a courtroom drama that was adapted from a John Grisham novel. With that kind of disjointed resume that includes an adaptation of a Grisham novel and a Dracula film credited to the same director leaves me with a raised eyebrow. It is not a bad list of any sort more than it is a hodgepodge pile of stories. Just about every single film that Coppola has been involved in since the beginning of his directing career holds some entertaining value for the audience to enjoy. The man is an award winning filmmaker who knows what he is doing. These days he has one more “career hat” that he wears. Did you know he owns and operates a wine vineyard? Yes, it is true! You can buy a bottle of wine from his vineyard if you are into that sort of thing. Just check out your local Target store or grocery store to see if they have a stock of his wines available. He appears to be following many passions in his life and being successful in everything he does.

How many directors can you recall who are proficient tuba players? Honestly, I cannot recall anyone other than Francis Ford Coppola. As a child he was introduced to music by his father, Carmine Coppola, when he began meddling with playing the tuba. In fact, his father wrote a few songs for The Godfather (1972). Most likely this particular background in music would be the catalyst behind the Coppola's decision to direct music themed films such as Captain EO (1986), The Cotton Club (1984), and Finian's Rainbow (1968). Even in the dramatic films there is a musical quality to the audio track. Just listen to the haunting musical score for The Godfather or the blues sound for The Rainmaker (1997) and you may notice a certain audible vibe that cements in the mood for the story. However, not all of his films rely heavily on a musical backbone. Have a very close listen to the audio track in The Conversation (1974), which was edited by film and sound genius Walter Murch. The volume control and multilayer use of sound effects in the movie are closely tied in with the movements of the camera in order to draw your attention to very specific items in the storyline as they appear on screen. Hey everyone it is D.J. Heinlein from the blog site Matte Havoc. The thirteenth installment of The LAMBs in the Director’s Chair is a litter under a month away and I am excited about this one. Francis Ford Coppola has directed a large number of hit films that have resonated throughout the world of dramatic filmmaking. In recent years he has slowed down a bit with directing new films, but he has been busy with his involvement in his wine business, a quarterly short fiction magazine (All-Story), and also producing a few films along the way. Over the course of his career as a director his style has been diverse enough to include a war film, a mob film, a musical film, and a trial lawyer film. All of these are dramatic stories which have held the interest and attention of the audience from start to finish. For those who would like to see a complete list of films that he has directed for a reference guide of movie titles to watch I would recommend visiting the director's section of his IMDb profile page that is linked here.

Now for those of you who have never participated in this event before I would like to present the basic list of instructions and rules for participation in the series. The golden guideline would be that all participants must be a current member of the LAMBs or at least on the waiting list for approval to become a member. The second guideline of participation in the series would be for everyone to write and publish an article about the candidate who has been selected for the event. The focus of every article must stay within the arena of the person’s career as a movie director. The third and final item on the list of guidelines is an uncompromising rule of meeting the deadline for submission. Every article that you would like to submit for the event must be e-mailed to DJ Heinlein [ mattehavoc@gmail.com ] by 10 PM the night before the first day of the event. If you would like to submit an article that you published a couple of months or years ago I will accept them for participation in the event. Make sure to include a direct URL link to every article that you would like to submit. There is no minimum or maximum number of articles that can be submitted.

On a side note I usually ignore e-mails filled with explanations and plans of publishing an article for the event. My inbox fills up very quickly with submissions for this event and I might over look a submission by accident if I am spending time deleting e-mails that are filled with explanations about future publishing instead of valid and direct links to articles that are already available online. The best way to get involved in the series is to publish the article and then submit the link by e-mail. No explanations are necessary.
