The LAMBs in the Director's Chair #14.3

The LAMBs in the Director's Chair

Event #14 starring Terry Gilliam
February 18th to 20th, 2011

DAY THREE

Hey everyone it is D.J. Heinlein from the blog site Matte Havoc here to present to the third and final day of the fourteenth installment of The LAMBs in the Director's Chair series. It would be fitting to allow Terry Gilliam to directly explain the approach he takes when creating a new film or story to tell his audience:
I never wanted to make naturalistic films. I’ve always liked the idea that film is an artifice, and that this is admitted right from the start. So we create a world that isn’t true to a realistic naturalistic world, but is truthful. That is the main thing. I think it also comes from being a cartoonist. I’ve always abstracted. Cartoons always push toward the grotesque. You twist, you bend, you shape. Brazil is that way.
The quote has been pulled from an interview with The Believer Magazine that had occurred at the 2002 Telluride Film Festival. The transcript for the entire interview can be read on the magazine's website.

DAY TWO

Hey everyone it is D.J. Heinlein from the blog site Matte Havoc here to present to the second day of the fourteenth installment of The LAMBs in the Director's Chair series. One of my favorite films from the 1980s would be Terry Gilliam’s retro-future fantasy film Brazil (1985). Inspired by the song Aquarela do Brasil written by Ary Barroso the story centers around the character Sam Lowry, who is a notorious day dreamer and underachiever with the skills to excel at his work. Today we will be looking at a couple of reviews for the film in addition to a couple of the most famous Monty Python movies that Gilliam has been involved in co-directing.

DAY ONE

Hey everyone it is D.J. Heinlein from the blog site Matte Havoc here to present to another installment of The LAMBs in the Director's Chair series. For those who were not aware of his American nationality, I will enlighten you that Terry Gilliam was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on November 22, 1940. I begin with this simple introduction to debunk any notion or myth that he is British born. This correlation is often based upon the animation and directing work he did for the Monty Python comedy troupe during the early portion of his career. Because of his background in animation and illustration he has proven to be an extremely visual guy. His eccentric character of a personality is further displayed in some of the animated works that he has produced. Working for Mad Magazine and the English television show Do Not Adjust Your Set may be further evidence of his unique perspective on storytelling. In the first day of a three day series we will be having a broad look at his career with a couple of editorials in addition to one particular website article that dares you to state your preference on Gilliam’s earlier works versus his later works.

Hey everyone it is D.J. Heinlein from the blog site Matte Havoc. The fourteenth installment of The LAMBs in the Director’s Chair features one of the most interesting of eccentric directors living today. He is visually artistic, comedic, and a visionary in modern filmmaking. His rise to fame has stemmed from his writing days for the Monty Python comedy troop. I am referring to the director of two films that are currently on my top ten list of favorite movies: Terry Gilliam! For anyone who is unfamiliar with his directorial work might want to check out Brazil (1985) and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998).

Now for those of you who have never participated in this event before I would like to present the basic list of instructions and rules for participation in the series. The golden guideline would be that all participants must be a current member of the LAMBs or at least on the waiting list for approval to become a member. The second guideline of participation in the series would be for everyone to write and publish an article about the candidate who has been selected for the event. The focus of every article must stay within the arena of the person’s career as a movie director. The third and final item on the list of guidelines is an uncompromising rule of meeting the deadline for submission. Every article that you would like to submit for the event must be e-mailed to DJ Heinlein [ mattehavoc@gmail.com ] by 10 PM the night before the first day of the event. If you would like to submit an article that you published a couple of months or years ago I will accept them for participation in the event. Make sure to include a direct URL link to every article that you would like to submit. There is no minimum or maximum number of articles that can be submitted.

On a side note I usually ignore e-mails filled with explanations and plans of publishing an article for the event. My inbox fills up very quickly with submissions for this event and I might over look a submission by accident if I am spending time deleting e-mails that are filled with explanations about future publishing instead of valid and direct links to articles that are already available online. The best way to get involved in the series is to publish the article and then submit the link by e-mail. No explanations are necessary.

If you have any questions about the event you can e-mail them to me and I will respond as quickly as possible. Listed below are a few promotional graphics that you can post on your blog site to help promote the event. Have fun and knock yourself out with your reviews and editorials.

Director's Chair #13 -- Day Three

The LAMBs in the Director's ChairThe LAMBs in the Director's Chair
Event #13 starring
Francis Ford Coppola
January 11th to 13th, 2011

Film director Roger Corman can be attributed with offering Francis Ford Coppola with an extremely helpful boost back in the early 1960s. Coppola was working as a production assistant for Corman when they were shooting the film The Young Racers (1963). During the course of the production Coppola was able to borrow some of the cast, crew, and production equipment during the down time of the shooting schedule. The side project was a feature length screenplay that Coppola had written titled Dementia 13 and he was able to film the movie with the borrowed equipment and personnel. The helpful “leg up” from Corman allowed Coppola to gain a notable amount of real world experience in the film industry, but it did not place him on the map as an immediate icon in filmmaking. It was not until a few years later when he scored the job of adapting a couple of published books into a military biography-film that scored him award-winning recognition at the Oscars. The film is Patton (1970) and he now shares his Oscar award with fellow writer Edmund North. This opened up the floodgates for him to move into big name projects that he has directed such as The Godfather and The Conversation.

A large amount of appreciation goes out toward the blog writers who have participated in this ongoing series. It is always exciting to see everyone contributing to a collective list of reviews and editorials that focus upon the career of a single director. In the next couple of weeks there will be an announcement of the director who will be the focus of the fourteenth installment of the Director's Chair series, so make sure to stay tuned to the LAMBs site.

Director's Chair #13 -- Day Two

The LAMBs in the Director's ChairThe LAMBs in the Director's Chair
Event #13 starring
Francis Ford Coppola
January 11th to 13th, 2011

Francis Ford Coppola has worn many production hats over the course of his filmmaking career. He has written screenplays, produced several films, worked as a production assistant on several movies during the early part of his career, as well as earning a notable career as a movie director. The range of movies within his career include such a strong variety of genres that it can be a bit surprising to consider they are all connected to the same director. There are a couple of horror films to his credit, a widely recognizable war film that he penned and directed, and a courtroom drama that was adapted from a John Grisham novel. With that kind of disjointed resume that includes an adaptation of a Grisham novel and a Dracula film credited to the same director leaves me with a raised eyebrow. It is not a bad list of any sort more than it is a hodgepodge pile of stories. Just about every single film that Coppola has been involved in since the beginning of his directing career holds some entertaining value for the audience to enjoy. The man is an award winning filmmaker who knows what he is doing. These days he has one more “career hat” that he wears. Did you know he owns and operates a wine vineyard? Yes, it is true! You can buy a bottle of wine from his vineyard if you are into that sort of thing. Just check out your local Target store or grocery store to see if they have a stock of his wines available. He appears to be following many passions in his life and being successful in everything he does.

Five-part Career Editorial (Flicker Myth)

Reviews for The Godfather, Part II (1974).

Review for Tetro (2009).

Reviews for Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992).
On the final day of the series there will be a couple of reviews for Coppola's classic horror film Dementia 13 (1963) as well as the only war film in his collection, Apocalypse Now (1979).

Director's Chair #13 -- Day One

Event #13 starring

January 11th to 13th, 2011

How many directors can you recall who are proficient tuba players? Honestly, I cannot recall anyone other than Francis Ford Coppola. As a child he was introduced to music by his father, Carmine Coppola, when he began meddling with playing the tuba. In fact, his father wrote a few songs for The Godfather (1972). Most likely this particular background in music would be the catalyst behind the Coppola's decision to direct music themed films such as Captain EO (1986), The Cotton Club (1984), and Finian's Rainbow (1968). Even in the dramatic films there is a musical quality to the audio track. Just listen to the haunting musical score for The Godfather or the blues sound for The Rainmaker (1997) and you may notice a certain audible vibe that cements in the mood for the story. However, not all of his films rely heavily on a musical backbone. Have a very close listen to the audio track in The Conversation (1974), which was edited by film and sound genius Walter Murch. The volume control and multilayer use of sound effects in the movie are closely tied in with the movements of the camera in order to draw your attention to very specific items in the storyline as they appear on screen. In order to get the ball rolling on the first day of The LAMBs in the Director's Chair (part 13) we will begin with the reviews for the film The Conversation.

Reviews for The Conversation (1974).

Reviews for The Godfather (1972).

Review for One from the Heart (1982).

Review for Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988).

Reviews for Rumble Fish (1983).
Make sure to stay tuned for the second day of the event where there will be a few reviews for The Godfather, Part II (1974) in addition to a five-part editorial about Coppola's career!

Hey everyone it is D.J. Heinlein from the blog site Matte Havoc. The thirteenth installment of The LAMBs in the Director’s Chair is a litter under a month away and I am excited about this one. Francis Ford Coppola has directed a large number of hit films that have resonated throughout the world of dramatic filmmaking. In recent years he has slowed down a bit with directing new films, but he has been busy with his involvement in his wine business, a quarterly short fiction magazine (All-Story), and also producing a few films along the way. Over the course of his career as a director his style has been diverse enough to include a war film, a mob film, a musical film, and a trial lawyer film. All of these are dramatic stories which have held the interest and attention of the audience from start to finish. For those who would like to see a complete list of films that he has directed for a reference guide of movie titles to watch I would recommend visiting the director's section of his IMDb profile page that is linked here.

Happy holidays everyone! I am unsure if it was poor planning on my part to schedule the twelfth installment of The Director's Chair after the six day extravaganza known to every American as the weekend of Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. Due to some reason beyond this immediate scapegoat of a holiday weekend the turnout of participation for the event is extremely low. As a result of low participation I have decreased the number of days from three down to one. Therefore every valid article that has been sent in for the Ed Wood themed Director's Chair event has been listed below for your perusal.

Hey everyone it is D.J. Heinlein from the blog site Matte Havoc. The time has come to announce the twelfth candidate of the LAMBs in the Director’s Chair series. The event has been slated for the end of November, which I am hoping will be enough time to watch and review a movie or two from the ghastly film catalog of Ed Wood. For those who may never have heard of him might consider watching the Tim Burton film Ed Wood (1994) starring Johnny Depp and Martin Landau as a precursor to participating in this event. I know there are a couple of the LAMB bloggers who have been looking forward to participating in this event and maybe we will discover a few more Wood fans out there.

Happy Halloween to all the hardcore holiday fans out there! Today marks the third and final day of the Director’s Chair: Alfred Hitchcock edition. If you have not done so already it would be worthwhile to visit the first day and second day of the series in addition to the material for today. A large number of film reviews have been submitted for this series and I hope you have been able to read as many of them as you can possibly sift through. The reviews span across twenty-nine films that were released over the course of forty years. For the third and final day we will be looking at the last leg of film reviews that have been submitted. Some of these films are the most recognizable titles of Alfred Hitchcock’s career.

REVIEW FOR The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934 / 1956)
REVIEW FOR Rich and Strange (1931)
Le Mot du Cinephiliaque

REVIEW FOR Vertigo (1958)
REVIEW FOR The Paradine Case (1947)

Upon conclusion I would like to offer a grateful amount of appreciation for those who have participated in the Director’s Chair series. The eleventh installment holds an impressive turnout of participation, which has proven to me to be interesting experience with coordinating the material into an organized event. I am looking forward to making the announcement of the candidate for the twelfth installment in the next couple of weeks. I hope you will be able to participate.

LAMBs in the Director's Chair
Event #11 starring Alfred Hitchcock
October 29th to 31st of 2010

< DAY ONE >

It must be said at the very start of the proceedings for today that it has been posted quite a bit late in the day. My apologies for those who have been patiently waiting all day long to read the articles that will be linked in the first day of the Hitchcock themed event. The turnout for the current Director’s Chair event is tremendous, which has left me joyously surprised by the participation from everyone involved. Keep in mind that it is only the first day of a three day event, which means if you do not see a link for an article that you know has been submitted then you may need to keep an eye open in the next two days, because it will be posted. Without further ado I would like to distract you with a MacGuffin.

CAREER EDITORIALS
I would like to begin with a couple of editorials which view at various themes and elements of Hitchcock’s film career. Some of these articles are a single part in a series of essays written about Alfred Hitchcock and I am planning on posting the rest of the series of articles in the next two days.

Hey everyone it is D.J. Heinlein from the blog site Matte Havoc. The time has come to announce the eleventh candidate of the LAMBs in the Director’s Chair series. The event has been slated for the end of October, which I am hoping will be enough time to watch and review a movie or two or ten from Hitchcock's film catalog. How irresistible is it to ignore the Master of Cinematic suspense for the month of October? For those of you who have never participated in this event before I would like to present to everyone the basic list of instructions and rules of the series.

The golden guideline would be that all participants must be a current member of the LAMBs or at least on the waiting list for approval to become a member.

Second guideline of the series would be for everyone write and publish an article about the person who has been selected for the event and the focus must stay within the arena of the person’s career as a movie director.

Third item on the list is an uncompromising rule of meeting the deadline for submission. Every article that you would like to submit for the event must be e-mailed to DJ Heinlein [ mattehavoc@gmail.com ] by 10 PM the night before the first day of the event. Make sure to include a direct link to every article that you would like to submit (there is no minimum or maximum number of articles that can be submitted). If you send an e-mail explaining how you have a plan to publish the article instead of sending an actual link to the article then the e-mail will be automatically deleted and permanently forgotten about forever. Talking about your grandiose plans of earning the Pulitzer Prize of film criticism is not the same thing as turning in your homework for the assignment.

If you have any questions about the event you can e-mail them to me and I will respond as quickly as possible. Listed below are a few promotional graphics that you can post on your blog site to help promote the event. Have fun and knock yourself out with your reviews and editorials.
