LAMBcast #27

FYI: I started a dedicated Facebook page for the LAMBcast. I'll still post something here when a new episode is released, but if you're looking for a central place for commentary, suggestions, complaints, etc., go here (and LIKE it!).

They say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. Well, we'll see about that.

The LAMBcast pays tribute to the LAMMY-nominated podcasts by not just paying lip service, but actually becoming them. Yes, that's right - we did a segment of the show using each of the five nominated podcasts - The Matineecast, The Film Cynics, The Simon & Jo Film Show, A Life in Equinox Podcastmonium, and The Demented Encyclopedia - as our templates. Some we did better than others...you'll see.

On hand for all this tomfoolery was Nick Jobe, Jason Soto, Travis McCollum, and myself. Oh, and this episode is chock full of the cursing. Not for wee one's ears.

LAMBcast #22

It's the moment you've all been waiting for! The glitz and glamour of the LAMMYs have made their way to the LAMBcast. That's right - the main post and voting instructions will arrive shortly, but this is the spot if you want to be amongst the first to hear the nominations for the 2010 LAMMY Awards.

I was joined by a rogue's gallery of awards commentators (specifically, Rachel Thuro, Nick Jobe and Travis McCollum) as we spelled out the 15 categories, the nominees, and where applicable, gave a shout out to the winners of years past. Along the way, a few extended discussions (e.g. What does it mean to be a Horror/Sci-Fi Blog, and is a specific award relevant for them?) and at the end, our usual games of Last LAMB Standing and some Trailer Talk.

"Do you have a MILF?"

Just in time for Mother's Day (or Mum's Day), the LAMBcasters (hey you, become one - see below) set out to talk out some of our favorite movie moms - the good, the bad, and the ugly (and yes, the MILFs).

We had a full house of participants, too. On board were Rachel Thuro, Travis McCollum, Nick Jobe, Tom Clift, and me as your humble host. The feature discussion was followed up with a couple games of Last LAMB Standing and a lively Trailer Talk.

LAMBcast #19

With no major releases out the week of recording, the LAMBcast took a left turn, topically speaking, and this time consisted of a trip down short-term memory lane. The four LAMBcasters on board (host Dylan Fields, along with Rachel Thuro, Travis McCollum, and Nick Jobe) each recounted their myriad recent viewings (Peacock, anyone?), theatrically and otherwise, for what turned out to be a lively discussion, so much so that we had to skip out on Trailer Talk, though we still managed time for a couple games of Last LAMB Standing. (Note: DVDs shown in image are not a reflection of the films discussed.)

PLUG: The Movie Encyclopedia

Uwe Boll...director, writer, boxer, and infamous director known as the modern day Ed Wood. Whether or not you like him people have always wanted to know what he's thinking when he's making his films. By a stroke of dumb luck I was able to get an exclusive interview with Uwe Boll where we talk about his future, his favorite films and delve into some of his stories of past productions. It was a great interview and even if you hate him, it's worth checking out just to hear some of his answers. You might be surprised.

LAMBcast #18

After a few weeks off, the LAMBcast has returned, with an enthusiastic discussion of the lone film that's been worthy of being enthusiastic about to hit theaters in recent weeks, Kick-Ass. Ob board was host Nick Jobe, along with Mike Mendez and Mr. Last LAMB Standing himself, Travis McCollum. Listen up as the gents dissect the Matthew Vaughn flick, briefly discuss some trailers, including the revolting Human Centipede (which Travis has had the misfortune of already seeing), as well as not one or two but three games of Last LAMB Standing.

Judging from early returns, this looks to be quite possibly the best LAMMYs yet. We've got 15 ballots in already, I'm seeing LAMMY posts here and there across the netiverse, getting questions on Twitter (@blogcabins), and have received a total of 17 19 (just got two more in the last five minutes) FYC ads already. And we're barely more than 24 hours from the start date. You guys and gals rock! My only worry now is that I'll be posting like a mad man trying to get all of the FYCs up before May 12th (to go along with new LAMBs and other regular features here) - looks to be a busy time at the LAMB.

LAMBcast #14

Did you see The Crazies? If not, have no fear, as 2/5 of the participants in this episode hadn't seen it, either. The focus quickly turned away from Nick's strange theatrical experience seeing the George Romero remake and onto a discussion of remakes, reboots, reimaginings, prequels, sequels, and what the hell the difference is between all those things. Of course, very few conclusions were drawn. This was all topped off by two, dare I say, competitive games of Last LAMB Standing, and a remake of previous Trailer Talk discussions (frequent listeners will know what I mean).

The LAMB Devours the Oscars - Best Sound Mixing

Ever since the late 20s-early 30s sound has been a major part of films. Some Silent Film enthusiasts believe it's what damned the film industry but for the most part most people think sound is one of, if not the most important part of a film. If you think about it while visuals ARE important without sound we would be bored to tears. Imagine if films like Black Hawk Down, Transformers or The Bourne series didn't have sound. They wouldn't have been as effective as a film! One of the best scenes in Black Hawk Down is when they are riding across the ocean in the helicopter and all you can hear is the noise of the helicopter. It's such an overpowering sound that adds SO much to the film. Both of the Transformer films use sound to magnify the effect of the transformations. The "Ree kee kee" noise that you hear when they are transforming is almost more exciting than the actual transformation because you know "OH SNAP THAT IS THE SOUND OF THINGS ABOUT TO BE GOING DOWN!" And in a film like Bourne Ultimatum sound is crucial. During the apartment fight scene the music cuts out completely and relies on sound along to make the fight exciting. You hear every punch land, every kicks impact and every prop getting thrown at Bourne and the assailant. It's tension filled without needing sound.

But for some reason we don't really pay attention to these awards or at least the majority of us don't. A lot of people, for some reason only focus on the acting and film awards and completely forget about sound. I'd like to remind those people that without the sound editors and sound mixers that you wouldn't enjoy the movie as much.

Originally called the award for Best Sound, this award has been given out for a long time. Every year since The Big House in 1930 an award has been given for Best Sound (which later evolved into Best Sound Mixing). And this year is no different. As the Movie Encyclopedia I have had the pleasure (or displeasure) of seeing all of these movies that have been nominated this year. And now one by one I will list out the nominees and who I think is most worthy of walking away with the Oscar this year:

First up is Avatar-

Avatar, as most people know, is the high grossing magnum opus from James Cameron. Despite my gripes towards Avatar's story it's hard to say that it wasn't a pretty movie. The visuals were stunning and the sound complimented it well. This talented group of 13 people created a great variety of sounds for the film and mixed it all together well. Every tree, every creature and noise translates well onto the screen and the efforts by the recorders and re-recorders to make a rich, vibrant sound is evident. A definite front runner for the award.

Second is The Hurt Locker-

Kathryn Bigelow's masterpiece (besides Point Break) is not only a front runner for Best Picture but, in my opinion, a definite front runner for Best Sound Mixing. The Hurt Locker depends so much on Sound that it's not even funny. There is very little music in The Hurt Locker so the majority of what you hear is voices and sound effects. And I can tell you that without sound Hurt Locker would be a very boring film. With it though it is a very tense action thriller. Every step, every breath, every tick and every noise is important to create the suspense and tension that this film provides. These 3 talented people came together and have created a wonderfully recorded/re-recorded film.

Third is Inglourious Basterds-

Quentin Tarantino's Nazi/WWII masterpiece is great. All the action, all the suspense and the great writing and directing from Tarantino and the wonderful acting have made this a film that I will remember for a long time. As for the sound, unlike the first two I mentioned, isn't at the forefront of the film. It's there for sure and there are a few scenes (the opening scene with the creaking and the bat scene) that really do play up the sound really well or lack thereof but for the most part the sound takes a back seat. A great film but will not win the award for Best Sound Mixing.

Fourth is Star Trek-

J.J. Abrams took a break from Fringe and Lost to bring us a great re-imagining of the Star Trek Universe. Seven red shirted men were given the task of recording sound for the film. That is and still in my eyes is a daunting task. The sword fight clangs, the ship clanks, creaks and thrusters, the blasters and even the creatures all had to be brought together and mixed to create something special and they did just that. While I think the Academy overlooked this film in the Best Picture category I think that they were right to nominate this for Best Sound Mixing. I'm on the fence whether it will win or not but if it does win I wouldn't be surprised.

And last and certainly least (at least film wise) is Transformers: Rise of the Fallen-

While certainly out of place at the Academy Awards (the Razzies got it covered though) it's hard not to admit that it DOES deserve to be in this category. Whether or not you liked the film, the sound was great. The aforementioned "Ree kee kee" sound as well as all the explosion and fighting effects were crucial to this film. Without the sound this visually stunning film certainly wouldn't be as exciting. In fact the sound is the best part of the movie. The 6 hard working mixers definitely earned their paycheck with this one. Since the first one didn't win I doubt that this one will but like Star Trek I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

Overall I think this is a good category and each of the contenders deserve to be there. I personally think that Hurt Locker SHOULD win the award but I think, along with all the visual awards, Avatar may end up taking this award home.

A skeleton crew (compared to recent episodes) was on hand for the latest LAMBcast, with just three geeks sitting around talking movies instead of the usual four or five. LAMBTrax #1: Paycheck.

Hello LAMBs! This is Nick of Random Ramblings of a Demented Doorknob (and supposed Veep of the LAMB). I know it's been a while since I've hosted an event of relevance here (not including the LAMBcast), but I felt it was time for a change.

So what do we have?

I introduce to you... LAMBTrax, where we make good fun of "bad" movies... as the movie's playing! Fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000? Or perhaps the more recent RiffTrax (of the same people)? Well... I apologize for our poor-man's version, but hey... we tried.

And who is we?

I was joined by fellow LAMBs...

*Mike Mendez of Big Mike's Movie Blog
*Travis McCollum of The Movie Encyclopedia

And together we, very amateurishly, decided to riff on a movie.

And what is this movie?

We decided (OK, so we started with my choice) to go with the great Ben Affleck masterpiece... Paycheck!

So what do you need to do?

Well, you can subscribe via our PodOmatic site here. You could also subscribe via iTunes. Or you could just listen to us at the bottom of this post. But, of course, you'll need a copy of the movie, as well. Before you start playing the LAMBTrax, have the DVD set to the main menu with the volume at a bearable level (so to hear us and the movie). During our audio, we'll give you a tone (a bleating lamb) to signal you to hit play. Make sure to hit play right when the tone goes and not wait for the end of the tone, or else you'll be out of sync with the audio.

Now, this being our first attempt, it's a bit rough. Obviously, we learned from our mistakes and learned from each other for future episodes. Our jokes start off slow, but eventually pick up... because, hey, we don't want to hit y'all with a wallop of awesome right from the get-go, right? You'd probably die of a heart attack or something. And our timing is a bit rough (I believe all 3 of us started at different times, so for a little while at the beginning of the movie, some of the jokes might not match up with what's on the screen. But not for long, as we all pretty much re-sync with each other within the first 10 minutes or so).

All that being said, it was a totally fun experience, and I think we made a great first episode. If you have Paycheck, or can get a hold of a copy, please sit back, relax, and listen to three guys make fun of it for 2 hours.

As previously mentioned, the last time we recorded a LAMBcast, it was meant to cover Avatar followed by our best of 2009, plus all of the usual goodies. Well, we just couldn't contain ourselves, and despite the bladder-straining time it took to record the whole thing, we soldiered on for nearly three total hours (pre- and post-recording). So we did what needed to be done: split the ginormous episode in two.

In this episode (part two), we unleash our personal Top 10s on the world in a round robin fashion. Brutally Blunt Blog Blustering #27: The Movie Encyclopedia

It's Blusterin' Time!

And remember: Blustering should be a two-way street; if you've asked to be blustered, you better be a blusterer.

What I'll do is list a site; you're asked to critique it. But here's the catch: to induce the most honest reactions, don't leave the comment using your normal alias/login - instead, go anonymous, and be as brutally honest (or complimentary) as you wish to be. LAMBcast #8 (the "lost" episode)

Host Jason Soto and the rest of the gang on the latest LAMBcast were putting on a hell of a show. Unfortunately, it was so much show that Jason's computer just couldn't handle it. All was going smoothly until around the 25-minute mark, where some sort of glitch with his recording software crept up and sabotaged the 'cast from there on out, causing a delay between Jason's audio and that of the other participants. It starts off subtly but sadly gets worse as the show goes on.

The entire show has been published, both for posterity and in the interest of the podcasters, some of whom were taking part in their first podcast. Despite the incident, my thanks go out to Jason for supreme hosting duties. At the least, have a listen to the unaltered portion and get to know LAMBcast noobies Rachel and Travis a little bit.

The topic at hand was Christmas movies, of which the gang dissected to no end. Also on tap, though a bit harder to hear was a round of Trailer Talk and a game of Last Man Standing.
