The LAMB Devours the Oscars: Best Makeup

Editor's note: Welcome to the fifteenth of a 33-part series dissecting the 83rd Academy Awards, brought to you by the Large Association of Movie Blogs and its assorted members. Every day leading up to the Oscars, a new post written by a different LAMB will be published, each covering a different category of the Oscars. To read any other posts regarding this event, please click the tag following the post. Thank you, and enjoy!

by Rachel of Rachel's Reel Reviews

Makeup is such an essential part of filmmaking that it’s a shock it took the Academy 54 years before it began to annually recognize achievements of artists in the field. This year's three nominees display different techniques of makeup design, making it difficult to say one is truly better than the others, but only one can take the gold man home.

The Way Back
Plot: A group of prisoners escape from a Siberian Gulag camp during WWII and walk 4000 miles to meet their freedom in India.
Technique: At work here is a "man vs. nature" element. Dirty skin, snowy beards, dusty hair: all things essential to letting the audience know that this ragtag group of escapees has gone from the hottest desert to the coldest mountain top.
Possible Setback: Some may not consider dirtying up actors all that fantastical of a makeup effect.

Barney's Version
Plot: Spanning several decades, Barney spins the story of his own life, through his multiple marriages and his best friend's disappearance.
Technique: Since the film covers many years, loads of aging makeup had to be applied to multiple actors in both directions, looking both younger and older than they really are.
Possible Setback: Being one of the most basic techniques in makeup, is aging an actor really all that noteworthy anymore?

The Wolfman
Plot: After his brother's gruesome death, estranged son Lawrence Talbot returns to his family's estate only to be attacked by a werewolf and be cursed to turn into the monster during a full moon.
Technique: Not only does this film sport the fantasy element of turning Benicio del Toro into a werewolf, it's also set in the late 19th century, forcing period appropriate hair and makeup into the mix as well.
Possible Setback: The movie was pretty bad and released a year ago.

So who will win? Since this is the only nomination each film received, there isn't a chance they can get caught up in a sweep, so it's do or die at this point. Though the film was pretty terrible, my money's on The Wolfman, as it exercises the most exciting part of makeup and that is to create something beyond our world, and the look of the film is the only thing worth praising.  Added to that is the fact that artist Rick Baker has received the most nominations (11) and wins (6) in the category's history, with one of those wins being for An American Werewolf in London in 1981, which was also the inaugural win for the category.

The LAMB turns 3!

I started the LAMB three years ago with a simple purpose: I had looked around the blogosphere and saw a void in the movie-blogging community. Sure, there were (and are) several blog directories out there, but they were (and are, for the most part) highly impersonal. They were "one size fits all" places where blogs of all types were listed, and it seemed you were left hoping that your needle was the one that was found amongst the hay. I had been blogging on my own movie blog for a little less than a year at that time and had formed several relationships with other bloggers. So I sent out an email to 30 or so of them telling them that I'd started this new directory.

It was a modest start, but an enthusiastic one. People were thrilled to have their own place to mingle and discover. An IMDb linking here and a LAMMY event there led to some serious word-of-mouth spreading, and the site's membership grew rapidly. We celebrated LAMB #201 the day before the site's first birthday, and #382 before its second. This last year has seen the largest growth, with the 736th LAMB posted yesterday, which means there have been nearly as many LAMBs added in the last year as in the first two combined...and there are over 30 more in the queue as I write this.

I've been overwhelmed by this growth, in ways both exciting and challenging. The bigger the site becomes, the harder it has been to maintain that personal touch and intimate feel. I've put out the call to contributors several times over the years and have been honored to have no less than 17 others bloggers step up and host an event or - better yet - run an ongoing feature of their own. Bloggers taking some additional time out of their days or weeks to not only run their own sites but help to make this a better, more all-encompassing place. It's been an awesome sight to see.

But this day of celebration is bittersweet. As you might have noticed (or might have seen via a Facebook update some days back), my role has diminished here over the last few weeks. A few events in my personal life have triggered this - one tragic and the other on the opposite side of the emotional spectrum. I lost my mother 11 days ago, a passing that has, as you might imagine, hurt me phenomenally and made an immediate impact on my life as I struggle to assist my father in any way I can. On the bright side, my wife and I are adopting our first child, a baby girl that is due in early December.

The combination of these events has forced me to take a look at the time I'll have left in my life for blogging, and the LAMB specifically. As a result, I am stepping down as your "shepherd" and handing the reins over to Rachel Thuro of Rachel's Reel Reviews. Rachel has ran the LAMBscores feature for some time now, has been a frequent LAMBcast participant, is a longtime LAMB (#43, I believe), and more importantly is a good friend and someone I know will run the LAMB well. I don't think she has any major changes planned, but she has my full blessing to do anything that she wishes to, and my confidence that whatever she does will be in the best interest of the site.

With that said, you won't be rid of me completely. I'm going to continue to run the LAMBcast, and I'm sure to be a participant in many of our features, from the aforementioned LAMBscores to the Director's Chair series and so on. I'll still be here, just in the background.

So happy birthday, LAMB! I look forward to seeing what you do in the next year.

LAMBcast #38

Rachel, Jess, Nick, Jason and Dylan get together for some good old-fashioned LAMB chat, as in a grouping of a gaggle of LAMB old-timers. For this episode, we count down our five most anticipated flicks for the rest of 2010, and as you might expect, our tastes vary wildly (especially with that Jason guy around). Also on tap:

LAMBcast #32

You want over-analysis? You got it, friend. Nick, Tom, Rachel, Sebastian and myself gathered to take the trip down the rabbit hole that is Inception, engaging in a discussion full of spoilers (FULL OF SPOILERS) about Chris Nolan's latest mind-bender. We talk theories, strengths, weaknesses, and just where the most-discussed film of 2010 ranks amongst the Dark Knight director's best works? Detractors, prepared to be annoyed.

Despite the lengthy discussion, we still squeezed in some time for a pair of LLS games and some Trailer Talk about The Town and Faster.

FYI: I started a dedicated Facebook page for the LAMBcast. I'll still post something here when a new episode is released, but if you're looking for a central place for commentary, suggestions, complaints, etc., go here.

PLUG: Rachel's Reel Reviews

I'm in desperate need of a new tagline for my site! Since I haven't been able to come up with anything, I thought it'd be great to have someone else do all the hard work. I'll be taking submissions all week, then letting readers vote on the best tagline. The top two vote-getters will receive fabulous prizes! Click here for all the details on submission rules and prizes. Anyone is eligible, so tell your friends. I can't wait to see what you guys come up with!

Got a Press Release, something to Plug, or a Screener available for review (or some combination of the three)? Ok, don't get all crazy about it. Just click here and give me the details (what, when, where, and a link, for starters) - I'll handle the rest.

LAMBcast #22

Podomatic decided that today would be a good day to experiment and/or do something else to screw up their embedded players. If you're having issues reaching the player, getting an error about the XML file, please try to access using a non-Internet Explorer browser. Alternatively, you can go to this page: http://lambcast.podomatic.com/entry/2010-05-20T11_00_59-07_00. Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience.

UPDATE: All appears to be in working order now.

It's the moment you've all been waiting for! The glitz and glamour of the LAMMYs have made their way to the LAMBcast. That's right - the main post and voting instructions will arrive shortly, but this is the spot if you want to be amongst the first to hear the nominations for the 2010 LAMMY Awards.

I was joined by a rogue's gallery of awards commentators (specifically, Rachel Thuro, Nick Jobe and Travis McCollum) as we spelled out the 15 categories, the nominees, and where applicable, gave a shout out to the winners of years past. Along the way, a few extended discussions (e.g. What does it mean to be a Horror/Sci-Fi Blog, and is a specific award relevant for them?) and at the end, our usual games of Last LAMB Standing and some Trailer Talk.

LAMBcast #20

"Do you have a MILF?"

Just in time for Mother's Day (or Mum's Day), the LAMBcasters (hey you, become one - see below) set out to talk out some of our favorite movie moms - the good, the bad, and the ugly (and yes, the MILFs).

We had a full house of participants, too. On board were Rachel Thuro, Travis McCollum, Nick Jobe, Tom Clift, and me as your humble host. The feature discussion was followed up with a couple games of Last LAMB Standing and a lively Trailer Talk.

LAMBcast #19

With no major releases out the week of recording, the LAMBcast took a left turn, topically speaking, and this time consisted of a trip down short-term memory lane. The four LAMBcasters on board (host Dylan Fields, along with Rachel Thuro, Travis McCollum, and Nick Jobe) each recounted their myriad recent viewings (Peacock, anyone?), theatrically and otherwise, for what turned out to be a lively discussion, so much so that we had to skip out on Trailer Talk, though we still managed time for a couple games of Last LAMB Standing. (Note: DVDs shown in image are not a reflection of the films discussed.)

For Your Consideration: Rachel's Reel Reviews

Hey you! Send me an FYC image and I will put it up! I don't care if I get one from 50 sites, I'll find a way to get them all up, and as soon as possible (the nomination voting period only lasts until May 12th!). When you're ready to vote, do it here: http://www.misterpoll.com/polls/482056

FYC #4 is from yet another LAMB contributor (coincidence? I think not - these folks were on their game...or they just saw my drafts pending) - this time from the woman in charge of the LAMBScores (which she just posted a ton of today - see below), Rachel of Rachel's Reel Reviews, LAMB #43.

LAMBcast #11

The LAMBcast has moved! Due to its previous host no longer accepting new uploads, we've moved to Podomatic. I've transferred over our latest episode, in which we discuss our most anticipated for 2010, along with episode #10, for those that might have missed that one.

Podomatic has some great features, but their embeddable player is not one of them, as it's too wide for the sidebars and can't be narrowed properly. Instead, it will be included in posts such as this, and you can also find the link in the left sidebar in the Podcast Roundup. However, if you'd like to add the player to your site, click the little arrow in the top left corner of the player and copy the code.

This episode featured me as host, along with:

* Nick Jobe of Random Ramblings of a Demented Doorknob,
* Travis McCollum of The Movie Encyclopedia,
* and Rachel Thuro of Rachel's Reel Reviews.

LAMBcast #8 (the "lost" episode)

Host Jason Soto and the rest of the gang on the latest LAMBcast were putting on a hell of a show. Unfortunately, it was so much show that Jason's computer just couldn't handle it. All was going smoothly until around the 25-minute mark, where some sort of glitch with his recording software crept up and sabotaged the 'cast from there on out, causing a delay between Jason's audio and that of the other participants. It starts off subtly but sadly gets worse as the show goes on.

The entire show has been published, both for posterity and in the interest of the podcasters, some of whom were taking part in their first podcast. Despite the incident, my thanks go out to Jason for supreme hosting duties. At the least, have a listen to the unaltered portion and get to know LAMBcast noobies Rachel and Travis a little bit.

The topic at hand was Christmas movies, of which the gang dissected to no end. Also on tap, though a bit harder to hear was a round of Trailer Talk and a game of Last Man Standing.

In it, Jason was joined by fellow LAMBs:

* Tom Clift of Plus Trailers,

* Rachel Thuro of Rachel's Reel Reviews,

* and Travis McCollum of The Movie Encyclopedia.

It's A Wonderful LAMB: Rachel's Reel Reviews.

Well, it's been a good while since I've done this. Heck, it's been a while since I've done anything around these parts. In fact, the last time this was done, it was done by Fletch, and the last time I attempted anything (a third Versus event), it blew up in my face (lack of participants). So I'm back with an old reliable, It's A Wonderful LAMB. What is this, you might ask? Well, I take a look at some LAMB favorites, one blog at a time. So let's get to the new posting.

Blog Name: Rachel's Reel Reviews.
Posting Name: Rachel.
Country of Origin: USA.
LAMB Number: 43.

Other: Don't let the blinding red background throw you off ( :P ); Rachel's reviews are pretty darn good. And I'm not just saying that because she and I see perfectly eye-to-eye about 99.9% of the time (okay, so maybe that's a little to do with it). So what started out as Mrs. Thuro's Rants And Raves has evolved into Rachel's Reel Reviews.

The blog itself features a fascinating structure. First, the reviews in and of themselves have one element that I don't often see at many other movie blogs: They tell you whether or not there are spoilers within the review. Honestly, I think that's genius. It doesn't make her posts stick to one way of reviewing. It tells the reader straight up: "Hey... be careful, there are either mild or major spoilers herein." Or "Don't worry... you can read this review without fear of having a ruined experience!"

Another aspect of the blog that I quite enjoy is an entire section dedicated to episode reviews of Mystery Science Theater 3000. And why shouldn't the show get its own section? It's a movie-long television show of comedic genius. These were movies of the month, though that's slowed down a bit as of late.

And speaking of movie of the month, Rachel also worked for us here at the LAMB as one-time coordinator of the LAMB Movie of the Month (another activity that died due to low participation). But now you can catch her helping hands with every new posting of the LAMBScores, collecting the reviews and scores posted at the LAMB forum and put up onto the blog.

But enough about her LAMB involvement. There's still one more thing to talk about for Rachel's Reel Reviews: The scoring system. And what a better way to end the discussion than scoring (perverted minds away)? It's not exactly a basic 1-5 rating system, but it's not too out there to where it's confusing, either. Basically you have a picture of a movie reel (going with the reel theme) and posting however many reels she feels appropriate for the scoring. And all the reviewed movies can be found under specific scoring categories on the blog, as well.

So that's about all I have to say about Rachel's Reel Reviews! Give her a glance (or two), and you won't be sorry!

Until next time... see ya!

(too cheesy?)

The LAMB Action Hero (Round One): Bruce Wayne Vs. Lara Croft.

(Welcome to the first match of the first round of The LAMB Action Hero! Here you will read two different essays, both describing why one action hero would be a good roommate while their opponent's would be a bad roommate. At the bottom of the post will be a place to vote. Please vote as unbiased as possible, basing it on the essays. Vote for whoever you think would be the better roommate. You have three days to vote. Now let's enjoy!)

Update: Voting has now ended for this match.

-------------------

By Rachel from Rachel’s Reel Reviews.

A big beautiful mansion, a garage full of expensive cars, and a butler to cater to every single need: these are a few material things that both Bruce Wayne and Lara Croft have in common. Therefore, one must look beyond the materialistic elements of our action heroes in order to make a clear selection of whom I want to split the rent with…or mooch off of.

Although Bruce may be a little off in the head, what with creating an alter ego and all, at least he keeps all things concerning his winged buddy out of the main house. Chances of me getting attacked by his rabid bats or getting in the cross-fire of his training sessions are much less likely, since it all takes place several hundred feet underground. I probably wouldn’t be able to walk in the front door at Lara’s place without getting my head chopped off by that killer robot Simon that she lets run wild. Sure it’s supposed to be harmless and listen to her commands, but you should never trust machinery, especially the kind that can kill you. And what if I take the last Diet Coke and Lara sets that thing after me? I don’t want to spend my days looking over my shoulder for killer robots on the loose. And speaking of Simon, what about its creator, Lara’s little friend, Bryce? That guy has “pervert” written all over him. I don’t want to share the grounds with Lara’s techie geek sidekick, who’s probably up all night glued to his window with a pair of binoculars.

Forget the heroes-in-training though, as Bruce seems way more fun than Lara. He knows how to go out and party. Want to have dinner at the nicest place in town? “Let’s go buy it,” he’d say. When he takes a night off from dealing with the bad guys, Bruce certainly knows how to entertain to keep up his rich, playboy status. Poor Lara just sits at home, doing bungee ballet, hanging out with Bryce (ick!) and crying over her daddy’s memorial out in the garden. The girl simply doesn’t know how to live. And we’d have nothing in common. She’d sit around discussing guns, while I’d want to talk about shoes. The tomboy and sorority girl could never be BFF.

In spite of everything else, I could never live with Lara because let’s face it, I could never bring another guy home and still be dating him the next day. She simply says “Hello” and guys melt into drooling goofballs. Living with Lara would mean living without a love life. The constant jealousy would drive me insane. I just don’t think I’d have such a big problem with Bruce. He may bring the occasional bimbo home, but he wouldn’t try to make the moves on my date.

It’s a clear choice: for my own sanity I would have to answer Bruce Wayne’s “Roommate Wanted Ad.”

-----------------------

Lara Croft would be the best roommate, first because she’s got taste and style in her homes, even when traveling around the world. She’s really smart, building all kinds of devices that make being a superhero easier – outfits, machines, etc. Putting these two together, she even built a room large enough to do bungee-ballet; she’s athletic and creative at the same time. I’m sure she’d be willing to help me put up shelves; superhero kind of shelves that never sag or fall down. Plus, she has lots of experience traveling and knows people all over the world. I bet she’d throw parties at our house that would be terrific for meeting people and experiencing culture at the same time. She was raised in a wealthy home, but doesn’t have the rich kid entitled attitude. She’d clean and decorate with style rather than living in a hole. As a superhero, she’s not secretive so there’s nothing she wouldn’t tell you. You’d know that she was going to find an ancient artifact in Egypt or running to the Amazon to retrieve something valuable to civilization. She might not invite you (and who’d want to go all that way all the time anyway), but at least you’d know where she went and when she’d be back – no worrying if she skipped out on the rent or anything. Also, if you were walking down the street together or out to dinner, she’d definitely have your back and kick the crap out of anyone that bothered us, given she’s an expert in it. The best roommate ever.

Bruce Wayne/Batman would be a terribly boring roommate. You’d probably have to live with him for 20 years before he even bothered to show you where the bat cave was. Plus, you’d have to pay rent on a place that was able to encompass a bat cave and the slide to it without ever knowing what was there. He’d slip off and be secretive about where he was going, basically driving you crazy knowing he had a secret life that you weren’t allowed to be part of. He’s too secretive to be a good roommate, and unless he brought Alfred, he’s a spoiled rich kid who wouldn’t bother cleaning the toilet or vacuuming ever. He has no friends, so there wouldn’t be any interesting parties or social events he’d invite you to, he’s only part of the boring rich social crowd. Totally the worst roommate to have.

LAMB #43- Rachel's Reel Reviews

URL: http://rachelsreelreviews.com/
Site Name: Rachel's Reel Reviews

What is the main focus of your site (reviews, editorials, news, lists, etc.)?
I'm in it for the reviews. Everyone else is giving away their opinion: I might as well.

What are your blogging goals, personally and/or professionally? In other words, what, if anything, are you trying to get out your blog?
I find it has a cathartic effect to write about a movie I've watched. Plus, if I can't remember down the road if I've seen one or not, it'll serve as a reminder. And the bottom line is that I love film and my blog is great hobby.

Do you prefer an interactive 'community' for your blog or are you the teacher and your readers are the students?
I welcome any and all tasteful comments. I want discussion and debate.

How long have you been movie blogging for, and how frequent do you post updates to your site?
April of 2007. I'm almost at my one year anniversary and trying to get 100 film reviews in by then. I usually have at least one review up a week, but recently I've upped it to 2 or 3, trying to make my 100 goal by April.

Name up to three of your favorite movies (and no more).
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Fight Club, Pulp Fiction.

How did you hear about the LAMB?
Blog Cabins had a listing on IMDB's links of the day, and I just followed the link to LAMB in the sidebar.

Any additional comments, or give yourself an interview question that's not listed above.
I always warn if there are spoilers in my review, but I cannot control other's comments containing spoilers.

I rate on a grading scale of A+ to F. When I was in school, anything below a B- was highly unwelcome in my house, so I grade films almost as strictly.

The hype and reputation of a film can effect my view on it. For example, had I seen Juno without hearing other opinions first, I may have given it an A-, but due to it being grossly over hpyed and billed as the "best movie of the year" by many professional critics, I knocked it down to a B+. I'm tricky that way.

I have a few extras in the sidebar, like upcoming trailers, a random movie poll, movie quote of the week and actor of the month. At the bottom of my page is my ENTIRE movie library, though some films I gained only through marriage and take no responsibility for.
