No one guessed the answer to the last quiz. That's not surprising; it was pretty out there.

Here's the question again:

The answer:

Eric Stoltz, whose birthday is September 30, wore a wig made of his own hair in The Butterfly Effect. Personally, that would creep me out. But no one is paying me millions of dollars to act in movies; maybe the money helps make it less gross.

The movie is A Christmas Story. (It's never too early to start thinking about holiday movies!) I though it was interesting that the plot points about the tongue sticking to the flagpole and eating Christmas dinner in a Chinese restaurant were taken from A Christmas Story writer Jean Shepherd's book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash, which was compiled from short stories he wrote for Playboy in the 1960s.

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: Mutiny on the Bounty

A lone LAMB got the answer to the last question. I'm amazed anyone got it, considering the age of the movie.

Here's the question again:

Name the movie that had one cameraman die when a barge capsized during filming and also had two other crew members nearly killed because the ship they were on while shooting was lost at sea for two days.

The answer:

A barge with 55 crew and staff members capsized while shooting exterior scenes for the 1935 version of Mutiny on the Bounty, killing second-unit assistant cameraman Glenn Strong. Tragedy struck again when an 18-foot replica of the Bounty sailing ship carrying two crew members somehow got away from its tow and floated at sea for two days until a search party found it.

One a lighter note, Jimmy Cagney happened to be sailing his boat around California's Catalina Island while Bounty was being shot. He asked his friend and the movie's director Frank Lloyd if he could be in the film, so Lloyd had Cagney don a sailor's uniform so he could spend the day as an uncredited extra. David Niven also played an extra in the movie.

There were two-and-a-half correct answers to the last question. I say two-and-a-half because although one of the answers didn't name the movie I had intended, I haven't been able to find information that would disqualify the answer.

The answer:

Easter Parade

Ann Miller was the dancer in question. Sadly, she had been thrown down a flight of stairs by her husband while pregnant and hurt her back. It didn't stop her though. She just wore a back brace and soldiered on with filming Easter Parade.

David Cassidy (The Partridge Family) and Micky Dolenz (The Monkees) were both considered for the part of a historical character in a movie, but neither got the role. Who was the character and what was the movie?

Both the teen idols were offered the part of Jesus but it ultimately went to Ted Neeley. That turned out well for Ted, not only because he got to play Jesus again in a 2006 stage version of Jesus Christ Superstar, but also because he met his wife on the set when the movie was being filmed.

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz: Ghost Town

You're a hard group to stump, so I'm always surprised when no one guesses the answer to one of these movie quiz questions. But it seems I was able to get one past the LAMBs with the last question.

Here it is again:

Name the movie that features a scene with an elevator full of people, but when the elevator door opens and the camera points at the mirror that directly faces the door, there's no one in the reflection.

The answer:

Ghost Town

The people in question were ghosts, which is why they couldn't be seen in the mirror.

I truly enjoyed this Ricky Gervais-Greg Kinnear-Téa Leone vehicle, in which Ricky Gervais plays a sour dentist who can see ghosts. That plot might seem ho-hum if you haven't seen it, but for me the combination of a great script, those actors and a colorful New York backdrop made it rise way above my expectations.

This is one of my favorite teen movies. High schooler Mary (played by Jenna Malone) plays an underwater game in her pool with boyfriend Dean (played by Chad Faust), during which they tell each other secrets. When Dean reveals that he thinks he's gay, Mary gets so confused that she swims into the pool ladder and bonks her head. This sets off a chain of events that neither could have ever expected.

John Candy starred in 1991's Delirious as a soap opera writer who gets hit on the head and wakes up as a character in his own show. The movie with the same name but not the same plot is Tom DiCillo's Delirious, starring Steve Buscemi, Gina Gershon and the yummy Michael Pitt. Although DiCillo's 2006 version of Delirious is also about show business and a soap opera is part of the plot, the stories are nothing alike.

Bed of Roses, starring Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Masterson.

Christian Slater leaves Wall Street after a personal tragedy so he can live an easier life, which includes delivering flowers and listening to story time at the New York Public Library. In his new capacity as a delivery person who likes to see people's reactions when he comes to their homes with flowers, he runs across Mary Stuart Masterson's character, who isn't quite ready for the love he has to offer.

Christian Slater is convincing as a formerly damaged but healing person, and Mary Stuart Masterson is equally adept at conveying how almost irretrievably damaged her character became after a rough childhood. But it all works out in the end, making Bed of Roses a satisfying way for romantic-movie lovers to spend a few hours.

The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

This documentary was a surprise to me. I knew from the description that the story revolved around a homeless man, so I was expecting a bit of a sob story. It actually was, but not for the reason I expected. It was those darn parrots that made me sob. It turns out the movie's subject, Mark Bittner, is a bright and caring man who fell in love with and became an advocate for the flock of parrots that congregate in the Telegraph Hill section San Francisco. His homelessness is only a small part of the story. It's his relationship with the birds and the City of San Francisco that really make this movie worth watching.

Happiness is a weird trip through the lives of a variety of interconnected characters. Along the way the movie gives you up-close-and-personal views of pedophilia, sibling rivalry, murder and masturbation. And that's not even the strange part. To me, what made it odd is that all that was so funny. (I probably shouldn't admit that in public.) Happiness also features virtuoso performances, particularly by Philip Seymour Hoffman, so let's just say that's why I loved the movie.

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: Winter Passing

Image via WikipediaThere were three submissions for this quiz and only one was correct. I keep trying to make the questions hard enough to stump all the LAMBs, but I haven't succeeded yet!

Here's the last question again:

A movie featured a character who slept outside in his yard on a bed with an end table and lamp on either side of it. Which actor played the outdoor-snoozing character and what is the name of the movie?

The answer:

Ed Harris as Don Holden in Winter Passing

Winter Passing is a dreary but still marginally interesting study of a strange family, which includes a father who is an eccentric writer (hence the sleeping outdoors), and a daughter, played by Zooey Deschanel. There's also an odd duck caretaker portrayed by Will Farrell, who plays against his usual type by being pretty subdued.

Here's the winning LAMB:

Brian Dutkewich from The Cynical Blog named both Ed Harris and Winter Passing correctly.

The following LAMBs get honorable mention for their guesses:

Dylan from Blog Cabins guessed Sam Rockwell in Box of Moonlight. This was disqualified because Sam Rockwell's character only sort-of sleep outdoors on a bedroom set; his bedroom furniture was actually located in part of a trailer open to the outdoors. Other furniture in his "house" was located outdoors though.

Dean Treadway from filmicability with Dean Treadway guessed Harvey Atkin in Meatballs and Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. Neither of the characters slept in their own yards, so these don't qualify.

Here's the next question:

A movie character confesses to someone over a hot fudge sundae in a New Jersey diner that he/she murdered a doorman, cut him up, put the pieces into plastic bags in the freezer and was in the process of throwing him away, bit by bit. Which actor/actress played that character and what is the name of the movie?

(This question's a bit grim. Sorry!)

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: The Grand

Image via Wikipedia Okay, this is more like it. I made the last question harder and only one person got the answer. One other LAMB gave it his all and submitted multiple guesses, but unfortunately none of them were correct. I like that he tried so hard though!

A movie was released sometime in the last decade that had a scene featuring a character wearing a yarmulke covered with images of playing cards. Name the movie and the actor.

The answer:

Brett Ratner in The Grand

For those who haven't seen it, The Grand is a mockumentary about a winner-take-all poker tournament. Similar to Christopher Guest's movies (though Guest wasn't involved), there was only a loose script and most of the dialog was improvised. Brett Ratner was only on-screen for a few minutes, but his yarmulke covered in playing cards was definitely attention-getting.

Woody Harrelson, Dennis Farina, David Cross, Richard Kind, Cheryl Hines and Michael McKean star in The Grand, along with other great improvisational comedians. Everyone's performances were great, but what made it really worth watching for me was Chris Parnell's (30 Rock's Dr. Spaceman) take on the obsessive-compulsive characteristics of some actual professional poker players -- absolutely hilarious.

Image via WikipediaOkay all you smarty-pants LAMBs; you taught me something. I can see these movie trivia questions need to be much harder. In an effort to make this process easier for me, I made the last question much too easy for you. As a result, 10 people answered it correctly.
