No one guessed the answer to the last quiz. That's not surprising; it was pretty out there.

Eric Stoltz, whose birthday is September 30, wore a wig made of his own hair in The Butterfly Effect. Personally, that would creep me out. But no one is paying me millions of dollars to act in movies; maybe the money helps make it less gross.

The answer:

The movie is A Christmas Story. (It's never too early to start thinking about holiday movies!) I though it was interesting that the plot points about the tongue sticking to the flagpole and eating Christmas dinner in a Chinese restaurant were taken from A Christmas Story writer Jean Shepherd's book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash, which was compiled from short stories he wrote for Playboy in the 1960s.

Three people guessed the answer to the last quiz. One even bested me by naming another movie that also qualifies. So, one up, one down: I lost but I learned something.

Here's the question again:

The answer:

The movie I had in mind was Jaws but it turns out that Close Encounters of the Third Kind also qualifies. Spielberg's dog Elmer was Brody's pet in Jaws and was also seen during the release of the humans from the mother ship in Close Encounters.

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: Back to School and Flashdance

We have another stumper. But I'm not surprised; it was a pretty darn hard question.

Here's the question again:

What physical location do 1983's Flashdance and 1986's Back to School have in common? (I'm looking something more specific than the city or state.)

The answer:

Back to School's Thornton Melon (Rodney Dangerfield) takes a three-hour oral exam in the same room that Alex Owens (Jennifer Beals) made her dance audition in Flashdance.

Back to School also has some other interesting trivia associated with it: The song playing at Chaz's fraternity party is Everybody's Crazy, which was sung by Michael Bolton's during his days as a metal singer. I was fascinated by that, because I have a hard time picturing Michael Bolton singing heavy metal. Also, a shot of Rodney Dangerfield golfing in the opening montage was taken directly from Caddyshack footage.

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: Mutiny on the Bounty

A lone LAMB got the answer to the last question. I'm amazed anyone got it, considering the age of the movie.

Here's the question again:

Name the movie that had one cameraman die when a barge capsized during filming and also had two other crew members nearly killed because the ship they were on while shooting was lost at sea for two days.

The answer:

A barge with 55 crew and staff members capsized while shooting exterior scenes for the 1935 version of Mutiny on the Bounty, killing second-unit assistant cameraman Glenn Strong. Tragedy struck again when an 18-foot replica of the Bounty sailing ship carrying two crew members somehow got away from its tow and floated at sea for two days until a search party found it.

One a lighter note, Jimmy Cagney happened to be sailing his boat around California's Catalina Island while Bounty was being shot. He asked his friend and the movie's director Frank Lloyd if he could be in the film, so Lloyd had Cagney don a sailor's uniform so he could spend the day as an uncredited extra. David Niven also played an extra in the movie.

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: 16 Candles

Two LAMBs got the answer to the last question, which tells me they must be fans of '80s movies, teenage movies or both.

Here's the question again:

Name the movie in which Agnes Belushi (John and Jim Belushi's mother) plays an uncredited extra in a wedding scene.

The answer:

The answer is one of my favorite teen movies, 16 Candles, starring Molly Ringwald. Agnes Belushi is the woman Ginny Baker (played by the coincidentally named Blanche Baker) tries to sit next to while she's walking down the aisle at her wedding, stoned on tranquilizers.

This movie really captures the vulnerability of a teenage girl who already feels like a dork but is then thrown into abject insecurity when her parents forget her birthday. But it also has a happy ending, which involves the cutest guy in school. So our inner teenagers feel vindicated by the time the movie's over!

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: Baby Boom and What Women Want

I must admit, female LAMBs probably had the advantage with the last question because the movies in questions were chick flicks. But the question was pretty difficult, so no one got the answer -- male or female.

Here's the question again:

Name the two post-1980 films that take place at least in part at the same fictional advertising agency.

The answer:

The Sloane Curtis Advertising Agency was featured in What Women Want (2000) and Baby Boom (1987). Nancy Meyers was the common denominator between the two, because she directed What Women Want and wrote Baby Boom.

I don't know if you have to be a woman to love both these movies but it probably helps. I enjoyed that both touched on the vulnerabilities and strengths of businesswomen in a meaningful way while still managing to be funny. The transformation of Diane Keaton's character in Baby Boom was particularly poignant and timely, given the era it was released. Women were just beginning to find their power as more than subordinates in the business world, so balancing having a baby and a high-powered career was a relatively new concept.

Two people answered the last quiz correctly and our fearless leader Fletch came close with an answer that may or may not be correct. I couldn't find any evidence to support his answer online but that doesn't necessarily mean it isn't true.

Here's the question again:

On April 12 I posed a question about a female hoofer who danced in a back brace. This time I'd like to know the name of the male dancer who broke a rib while filming a dance scene but didn't stop dancing until he knew the scene was in the can.

The answer:

James Cagney was the die-hard dancer who kept on shooting the American flag-waving movie Yankee Doodle Dandy, even though he had a broken rib.

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: Barry Corbin and Tommy Lee Jones

Thanks to my brother Steve for the last question, which no one got right. Had I left it in the form he sent it -- it indicated that the movies were from 2007 -- I'm sure at least some people would have guessed the answer. But that would have been too easy, so I removed that minor point!

Here's the question again:

Which two actors played sheriffs together in one movie and ex-Army buddies in another? (Hint: The movies were released in the same year.)

The answer:

The actors are Barry Corbin and Tommy Lee Jones.

In 2007's No Country for Old Men, Barry Corbin played Tommy Lee Jones' father. His character had also been sheriff before Jones' character held that job. Additionally, Corbin played Jones' Army buddy in In the Valley of Elah.

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz: For Your Consideration

No one got the answer to the last question correct. It was a hard one, so I'm not surprised.

Here's the question again:

The answer:

For Your Consideration

The two actors are Ricky Gervais of the BBC version of The Office and John Krasinksi of the NBC version of the series by the same name. Gervais played a smarmy film exec in For Your Consideration and Krasinski played the "paper badge officer."

I was inspired to come up with a question for this funny movie because of all the For Your Consideration ads flying about the LAMB because of LAMMY season. This Christopher Guest movie didn't get as many good reviews as some of his other works but I thought it was hilarious. Catherine O'Hara in particular was amazing.

Andrew Fleming is the director who yells out the window as the credits roll in Threesome, which stars Lara Flynn Boyle, Stephen Baldwin and Josh Charles. Another interesting, if not a little grim, factoid about this movie is that it was released on April 8, 1994 -- the day Kurt Cobain was found dead.

This is one of my favorite teen movies. High schooler Mary (played by Jenna Malone) plays an underwater game in her pool with boyfriend Dean (played by Chad Faust), during which they tell each other secrets. When Dean reveals that he thinks he's gay, Mary gets so confused that she swims into the pool ladder and bonks her head. This sets off a chain of events that neither could have ever expected.

Delirious

John Candy starred in 1991's Delirious as a soap opera writer who gets hit on the head and wakes up as a character in his own show. The movie with the same name but not the same plot is Tom DiCillo's Delirious, starring Steve Buscemi, Gina Gershon and the yummy Michael Pitt. Although DiCillo's 2006 version of Delirious is also about show business and a soap opera is part of the plot, the stories are nothing alike.

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: The Enchanted Cottage

Three LAMBs sent in the same answer for the last question. Unfortunately, even though it was a great guess; it was incorrect. John of flickrater.blogspot.com, Kirby Holt of moviedearest.blogspot.com and Nell Minow of moviemom.com all guessed that I Remember Mama was produced by gossip columnist Louella Parsons' daughter Harriet. They were right; she did produce I Remember Mama. But there wasn't a silent version of that movie, at least not that I've been able to find. It was a good effort by John, Kirby and Nell, though -- and almost correct!

Name the Oscar-nominated movie that was produced by the daughter of a gossip columnist and had previously been both a play and a silent film.

The answer:

The Enchanted Cottage, produced by Louella Parson's daughter Harriet Parsons

The Enchanted Cottage is one of my favorite black and white movies. It began its life when the British government asked Sir Arthur Wing Pinero to write a play that would reach out to men wounded in WWI. It was then produced as a silent movie in 1924. Then, in 1945 Harriet Parsons produced the version that starred Dorothy McGuire and Robert Young.

If you haven't seen the movie; I highly recommend it. If the holidays tend to get you down, it will cheer you up. And if you're generally happy around this time of year, it will probably make you even more so.

It must have been difficult, because no one even submitted a guess. But to be fair, you would have to have a freakish knowledge of film (or at least of the movie Dark Victory) to have answered it correctly.

Dark Victory, starring Bette Davis

Elvis the mailman appears only for a moment after Bette Davis' character gets married and goes to live on a Vermont farm. I just happened to be watching Dark Victory when it was time to cook up the next question. Elvis the mailman walked onscreen for his minute of fame and became the subject of the next quiz.

Here's the last question again:

The answer:

Bed of Roses, starring Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Masterson.

Christian Slater leaves Wall Street after a personal tragedy so he can live an easier life, which includes delivering flowers and listening to story time at the New York Public Library. In his new capacity as a delivery person who likes to see people's reactions when he comes to their homes with flowers, he runs across Mary Stuart Masterson's character, who isn't quite ready for the love he has to offer.

Christian Slater is convincing as a formerly damaged but healing person, and Mary Stuart Masterson is equally adept at conveying how almost irretrievably damaged her character became after a rough childhood. But it all works out in the end, making Bed of Roses a satisfying way for romantic-movie lovers to spend a few hours.

I think I've made today's question a little more difficult. But then again, I thought the same thing about the last one.

The answer:

The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

This documentary was a surprise to me. I knew from the description that the story revolved around a homeless man, so I was expecting a bit of a sob story. It actually was, but not for the reason I expected. It was those darn parrots that made me sob. It turns out the movie's subject, Mark Bittner, is a bright and caring man who fell in love with and became an advocate for the flock of parrots that congregate in the Telegraph Hill section San Francisco. His homelessness is only a small part of the story. It's his relationship with the birds and the City of San Francisco that really make this movie worth watching.

Stump the LAMBs Movie Trivia Quiz Answer: Happiness

I had to laugh when the entries for the last quiz came streaming in. Leave it to the LAMBs to be familiar with such a strange movie!

The answer:

Camryn Manheim as Kristina in Happiness

Happiness is a weird trip through the lives of a variety of interconnected characters. Along the way the movie gives you up-close-and-personal views of pedophilia, sibling rivalry, murder and masturbation. And that's not even the strange part. To me, what made it odd is that all that was so funny. (I probably shouldn't admit that in public.) Happiness also features virtuoso performances, particularly by Philip Seymour Hoffman, so let's just say that's why I loved the movie.
